SPEAK! SO THE WORLD WILL LISTEN! UGANDA (excerpt)
Multimedia advocacy concert, 70 minutes
ANGEL'S POEM is a movement from SPEAK!, featuring a reading by Angel, a ten-year old orphaned child and Ugandan civil war survivor. Her poem is accompanied by a viola solo performed by Jamaal Jones, and vocals based on the Ugandan 'Kitaguriro' chant.
Speak! is a fusion of three different elements; visuals, live music, and human rights advocacy. Visually, recorded HD interviews are edited to form a 60-minute documentary, blended with computer-generated special effects and text animation. Musically, 18 live musicians (strings, woodwinds, vocals, and African percussion) perform to a score that combines western minimalism with East African rhythms. Finally, these two elements are assembled to form a narrative concert presentation. Taken in its entirety, the performance uses the eclectic power of the arts to open the eyes of it’s viewer to the issues that face humanity today
